Use Proper and Attractive Packaging to Grow Product Demand — Minister Francis Mwebesa
Kampala, Uganda — The Government of Uganda has urged local manufacturers, traders, and small-scale producers to adopt proper and attractive packaging techniques to enhance product appeal and boost sales.
The call was made by the Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Francis Mwebesa, during the opening ceremony of a three-day Master Class Training on Packaging Technology held at Pretoria Hotel, Kampala from 5th to 7th August 2025.
Hon. Mwebesa emphasized the significant role packaging plays in market competitiveness and sustainability. He highlighted that proper packaging not only extends the shelf life of products, especially food, but also improves overall quality and opens up broader trade opportunities.
He noted that Uganda’s industrial sector has shown remarkable growth, expanding from just 80 industries in 1986 to over 9,000 by 2025 — a major contribution to the national economy. However, he expressed concern that currently, about 50% of food in Uganda is lost due to poor storage and packaging practices.
The Minister encouraged participants of the Master Class Training to take the knowledge seriously, stating that better packaging solutions can directly lead to better business outcomes and improved livelihoods.
The three-day training brought together industry experts, producers, and packaging specialists aiming to equip participants with modern, sustainable, and market-ready packaging solutions.
