Uganda’s Parliament Approves Representation for Special Interest Groups Ahead of 2026 Elections

Kampala,Uganda
In a significant step toward inclusive political representation, Uganda’s Parliament has approved the composition of special interest groups for the upcoming 2026 electoral cycle. The approval on 20 October 2025 formalised minimum participation rights for groups marginalised by gender, age, disability, or tradition, as required under Article 32 of the Constitution.

Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Nobert Mao stressed this as a step to fulfil Uganda’s commitment to democracy and equal participation. The reform arrives amid broader changes and preparations for the 2026 elections, signalling renewed focus on representation and inclusion. For Uganda’s urban-based electorate, especially youth, women and people with disabilities, this may translate into enhanced voice and visibility in the political process.
