Ugandan Youth Turn to TikTok for News and Hustles

By Urban Gazette Digital Desk

Kampala — When 23-year-old Sheila posts a 30-second skit on TikTok, it reaches thousands of Ugandan youths in hours. But beyond the comedy, TikTok is increasingly where young people go for news, business, and influence.

Social Media as a Newsroom

A recent survey by the African Centre for Media Excellence found that 62% of Ugandans under 30 said they got news primarily from TikTok or WhatsApp, compared to only 18% from traditional newspapers.

Digital Hustles

TikTok is more than news. Youth are earning money through product promotion, paid content, and digital tips. “I sell thrifted clothes via TikTok Live,” says Brian, 20. “It pays more than my old shop.”

The Risks

Experts warn about misinformation. Viral rumors often outpace fact-checks, raising questions about regulation. “We cannot ignore TikTok — it’s where young Ugandans are,” says Dr. Jane Kiggundu, a media lecturer. “But digital literacy must grow with it.”
