Uganda Tightens Border Security to Curb Illegal Cargo and Smuggling
Increased patrols and technology aim to protect national trade and security
Kampala ,Uganda
Uganda has intensified border security along key entry and exit points in response to rising cases of smuggling and illegal cargo movement. Security agencies have expanded patrols and increased inspections of commercial trucks and small-scale traders operating along major trade corridors.
The government says the measures are aimed at protecting local industries, increasing tax collection and preventing the trafficking of arms, drugs and contraband goods. However, informal traders and transporters have expressed concern over longer clearance times and higher operating costs.

Why It Matters
Stronger border control helps protect national revenue and reduce criminal activity, but excessive restrictions risk slowing legitimate trade and raising the cost of essential goods for consumers.
What to Watch
Trends in border clearance times, arrests linked to smuggling networks and feedback from legitimate traders will indicate whether the new measures are working effectively.
