Uganda has intensified border security along key entry and exit points in response to rising cases of smuggling and illegal cargo movement. Security agencies have expanded patrols and increased inspections of commercial trucks and small-scale traders operating along major trade corridors.
The government says the measures are aimed at protecting local industries, increasing tax collection and preventing the trafficking of arms, drugs and contraband goods. However, informal traders and transporters have expressed concern over longer clearance times and higher operating costs.
