Uganda Signs Letter of Intent with the Netherlands on Transit Hub for Rejected Asylum Seekers

Uganda and the Netherlands have agreed on a Letter of Intent to cooperate on creating a transit hub in Uganda for individuals whose asylum claims are rejected in the Netherlands but who cannot return directly or voluntarily to their home countries in a reasonable time. The agreement was signed in New York during the UN General Assembly. It’s intended initially as a small-scale pilot. The plan includes human rights safeguards for returnees and consultation with international bodies such as IOM and UNHCR. The Netherlands says it is part of its efforts to manage migration flows. The timeline for implementing the hub has not been specified yet.
Why it matters:

Raises questions about Uganda’s role in international migration policy; possible benefits vs challenges of hosting returnees/transit migrants.

Concerns about protection, human rights and welfare of transit migrants.

Could shift migration dynamics in East Africa; precedent for other EU/non-EU deals.
