Uganda Expands Court Services to Remote Islands
Mobile courts and digital filing bring justice closer to marginalized communities.
Entebbe, Uganda Uganda’s Judiciary is taking justice to the margins. The Deputy Chief Justice announced a nationwide initiative to extend court services to remote island and rural communities, particularly around Lake Victoria and Lake Kyoga.
The program includes mobile court circuits, new permanent facilities, and digital filing systems to streamline case management. Local leaders welcome the reform, noting that many communities previously had to travel hundreds of kilometers for court services.
“Justice should not be measured by distance,” said Deputy Chief Justice Richard Buteera. “Every Ugandan deserves timely access to the courts.”
Civil society advocates emphasize the importance of proper staffing, transportation logistics, and transparent recruitment to ensure the program’s success.
