Uganda doubles down on peace and security agenda at AU-EU summit

Kampala urges deeper continental cooperation to strengthen regional stability and trade

Luanda /Angola/Kampala

At the seventh African Union–European Union Summit in Luanda, Angola, Uganda emphasised the importance of regional stability and the need for increased investment in peace and security across Africa. Representing President Yoweri Museveni, Robinah Nabbanja argued that continental stability is critical for trade, migration management, and sustainable development, urging AU and EU partners to deepen cooperation on security and regional peace. Uganda highlighted instability in neighbouring countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, as a threat to national and regional security and stressed that coordinated security investments are essential to protect livelihoods and promote economic growth.

Why it matters
Uganda’s positioning as a regional security advocate has implications for investment, trade, and development. By signalling leadership in regional peace efforts, Uganda seeks to stabilise border areas, attract investors, and mitigate regional conflict risks. Effective engagement with international partners could strengthen Uganda’s influence and foster broader stability in Eastern Africa.

What to watch next
Stakeholders will monitor whether AU and EU partners deliver concrete commitments following Uganda’s proposals. Uganda’s deployment of resources to maintain stability while balancing civil liberties, and developments in neighbouring conflict-affected states, will be key indicators of the strategy’s effectiveness.
