Uganda Doubles Down on E‑Mobility: 10,000 EVs & 260 Charging / Swap Stations

Jinja / Kampala — Uganda is accelerating its push into electric mobility, now targeting production of 10,000 electric vehicles annually and announcing the rollout of 260 charging and battery swap stations across the country.

Key Facts & Details

These developments stem from Uganda’s E‑Mobility Outlook Report 2024, unveiled ahead of the National E‑Mobility Expo 2025 (held in Jinja).

Over USD 160 million has been mobilized in e-mobility investments so far.

The locally manufactured vehicles now achieve ~40% local content in components such as battery packs and chargers.

Growth trajectory: from just 13 electric two-wheelers in 2019 to nearly 2,800 by 2024.

Officials cite the E-Bus Xpress pilot project in Jinja as a model for sustainable urban transport.

The Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation launched the Expo, stressing science, innovation, and climate resilience as cornerstone drivers for Uganda’s transformation.

Sustainable urban transport: Reduced emissions, cleaner cities, better air quality, opportunity to reduce reliance on fossil imports.

Industrialization & jobs: EV/charging infrastructure manufacturing, assembly, technical maintenance — new industries for youth employment.

Technical & infrastructure challenges: Grid capacity, energy storage, charging infrastructure distribution, access in rural zones.

Policy & incentives: Need for supportive regulations — tax incentives, import duties, subsidies, standards for batteries, safety.

Adoption & affordability: Ensuring that EVs are accessible, not just for elites; making public transport electrified.
