Uganda Aims to Plant 40 Million Trees to Reverse Deforestation

KAMPALA, Uganda — Uganda’s campaign to revitalize its forest cover is intensifying, with a national goal of planting over 40 million trees by October 3, 2025.

The initiative, known as the ROOTs campaign, encourages every Ugandan to plant at least one tree. The 2025 theme—“Revive, Restore, Sustain: Indigenous Species for Uganda’s Future”—underscores the focus on planting native species to maintain ecological balance.

Launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Water and Environment, the campaign collaborates with NGOs, civil society, private sector actors, and community groups. Previous years saw tens of millions of seedlings planted, but this ambitious target reflects growing urgency around climate resilience, land degradation, and biodiversity conservation.

Should Uganda reach this goal, it would represent one of the largest single‑year reforestation efforts in the region.
