Two Nabbed with Illegal Gun Near Uganda–South Sudan Border

A joint security operation has led to the arrest of two men and the recovery of an illegal firearm at the Uganda–South Sudan border, marking a significant step in efforts to curb cross-border crime.

The operation, conducted on Friday morning by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force, took place at Waligo Checkpoint in Lamwo District at around 10:00 a.m. The checkpoint is a known hotspot for smuggling activities and armed infiltration.

Security personnel intercepted the suspects as they attempted to cross into South Sudan. Among them was 27-year-old Okunga Isaac, a resident of Akor Village in Lira District, found in possession of a submachine gun (SMG) bearing serial number 25456 and a magazine loaded with five live rounds of ammunition.

Okunga was travelling on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEY 428G, operated by Lokoroma Gabriel, a resident of Pobel Village in Lamwo Town Council.

Both men were detained and are currently held at the Bravo Battalion Headquarters in Ngomoromo. Military officials confirmed they will be handed over to the police for further investigations and eventual prosecution.

Authorities emphasised that this operation is part of a wider strategy to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and disrupt criminal networks exploiting the porous Uganda–South Sudan border.

Security agencies have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat arms trafficking and cross-border crime.
