Tragedy Strikes UPDF Recruitment in Apac as 22-Year-Old Applicant Dies After Fitness Run

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) recruitment drive in Apac District was overshadowed by grief on Friday after a 22-year-old candidate collapsed and died shortly after completing the mandatory physical fitness run.

The applicant, identified as Dono Solomon, had just finished the short-distance run a compulsory stage in the recruitment process when he suddenly collapsed.

Apac Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Andrew Onyuk said medical personnel on standby responded immediately.

“He was rushed in an ambulance, which was following the runners, to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, upon arrival, he could not make it. This has been very unfortunate,” Mr Onyuk said, adding that a post-mortem examination is under way to determine the exact cause of death.

Mr Onyuk conveyed his condolences to Solomon’s family and applauded the recruitment team for their swift action. He also revealed that another applicant collapsed during the run but was stabilised after receiving urgent care.

Col David Opeero, who heads the recruitment team, outlined the four stages of the exercise — verification of shortlisted candidates, document checks, preliminary medical screening, and the run, followed by a comprehensive medical examination.

“In Apac, during the run, one of the participants collapsed. Despite prompt evacuation and first aid, he unfortunately passed away. The body is now at Apac Government Hospital. We have extended heartfelt condolences,” Col Opeero said.

The exercise continued after the incident, with both Apac and Kwania districts recording successful recruits.
