Tight Security, High Stakes: Police Issue Red Alert Ahead of CHAN Double-Header at Namboole

As the countdown continues to Friday’s highly anticipated African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 double-header at Mandela National Stadium, Uganda Police have issued a red alert, releasing a list of prohibited items and urging fans to strictly adhere to matchday security protocols.

On August 8, the stadium will host back-to-back Group C clashes — Algeria versus South Africa at 5:00 PM, followed by Guinea versus Uganda at 8:00 PM — in what promises to be an electrifying evening of African football under the floodlights.

In a joint security review with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), police commended fans for their discipline during earlier fixtures but cautioned that a small number attempted to flout regulations and were swiftly dealt with.

“The general public observed discipline, with only a few individuals attempting violations, who were promptly and firmly dealt with,” police said in an official statement.

To ensure the safety and smooth running of the event, authorities have released a strict list of prohibited items and advised fans to leave them at home. Police also urged attendees to arrive early, warning that security screening could cause delays.

“We urge all attendees to comply with these regulations for their safety and the safety of others,” the statement concluded.

With Uganda’s Cranes seeking redemption after a challenging start to their CHAN 2024 campaign, the team will be counting on strong and orderly home support to boost their chances against Guinea.
