Rotary, EACOP launches Green schools initiative a bid to promote environmental stewardship

KAMPALA, UGANDA — The East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) company signs a memorandum of understanding with two Rotary International districts in a launch of an environmental sustainability program in schools.

The “EACOP Green Schools Initiative” will provide resources and environmental education to schools in 10 districts along the pipeline’s 1,443-kilometer route. The districts include Hoima, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Kyankwanzi, Mubende, Gomba, Sembabule, Lwengo, Rakai and Kyotera.

During the signing ceremony,
District Governor 9213 Godfrey Martin Kitakule emphasized the organization’s commitment to environmental protection.

“This partnership is timely. Rotary’s commitment to supporting the environment aligns perfectly with the Green Schools Initiative,” Kitakule said. “There is no better way to secure a sustainable future than working with young people — the champions of tomorrow.” school goers.

Kitakule also mentions other Rotary’s conservation efforts, including plans to plant forests and protect the Nile Basin.

A floating hospital intended at providing healthcare to island communities was also talked about.

EACOP Deputy Managing Director JB Habumugisha called the initiative a “proactive response to the pressing need for sustainable solutions.

Christine Kyeyune Kawooya, governor for Rotary District 9214, also praised the collaboration.

“Our communities depend on how well we prepare the next generation to care for the environment,” she said.

She said the initiative will empower students to become “custodians of the environment.

Under this arrangement, Rotary will work closely with schools to promote tree planting, sustainable waste management, and climate education.

The initiative’s activities will include installing solar systems, establishing green spaces with fruit and vegetable gardens, improving waste management, and installing sanitation and rainwater harvesting systems.

The EACOP is a crude oil export pipeline that will transport oil from Uganda’s Hoima district to a port in Tanga, Tanzania. EACOP Ltd., the company responsible for the pipeline’s construction and operation, is a joint venture with shareholders including TotalEnergies, Uganda National Oil Company, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and CNOOC.

KAMPALA, Uganda (UG) — In a strategic move toward fostering environmental consciousness, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Rotary International Districts 9213 and 9214 to launch the “Green Schools Initiative.”

The program, aimed at promoting sustainability and environmental education, targets schools in ten districts along the 1,443-kilometre pipeline route, including Hoima, Kikuube, Kakumiro, Kyankwanzi, Mubende, Gomba, Sembabule, Lwengo, Rakai, and Kyotera.

Speaking at the launch, District Governor 9213 Godfrey Martin Kitakule said the partnership comes at a pivotal time for environmental action.

“This partnership is timely. Rotary’s commitment to supporting the environment aligns perfectly with the Green Schools Initiative. There is no better way to secure a sustainable future than working with young people — the champions of tomorrow,” he remarked.

Governor Kitakule also highlighted Rotary’s wider conservation efforts, including forest restoration initiatives and the protection of the Nile Basin. He briefly mentioned an upcoming floating hospital project designed to deliver healthcare services to island communities.

  • Improved sanitation and rainwater harvesting systems

The EACOP, once complete, will transport crude oil from Uganda’s Hoima District to the port of Tanga in Tanzania. EACOP Ltd. is a joint venture between TotalEnergies, Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), and the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC).
