Police Deny Extortion Allegations in Kajjansi Rape Probe

The Uganda Police Force has dismissed claims that its officers engaged in extortion or illegal property seizures while investigating a rape case in Kajjansi, Nakawa Division.

The case, reported on 23 August 2025 by a 22-year-old hairdresser from Zana, Makindye Municipality, involves two suspects identified as Ngobi Simon and another man known only as “Chairman.”

The victim alleges that she was given alcohol and driven to Canaan Estate, Akright, Kajjansi, where she was sexually assaulted.

Police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, said investigators acted promptly, recovering bedding, HIV testing kits, and other items for forensic examination. The victim received medical attention and specialized care, while detectives also impounded a silver-grey Subaru UBP 276F, reportedly used to transport her.

Witness statements, including those from estate security guards, were recorded. Preliminary inquiries indicate the victim locked herself in a room after the incident, prompting the suspects to flee.

Allegations circulating online suggested that officers raided the suspects’ home and extorted property. ASP Owoyesigyire strongly refuted these claims.

“The recovery of property was strictly to preserve evidence relevant to the sexual offence investigation. No illegal raids or extortion occurred,” he said, emphasizing that accountability measures will apply if any officer is found guilty of misconduct.

Police have appealed to the two prime suspects to come forward and give their statements.

“We urge these individuals to present themselves so due process can take its course,” Owoyesigyire said.

The force condemned the alleged crime and reassured the public of its commitment to lawful and transparent investigations.

“We categorically denounce all forms of sexual violence and reaffirm our duty to handle inquiries professionally, respecting the rights of all parties,” the statement read.

Investigations are ongoing, with police promising updates as the case progresses.
