Parliament Approves €183m Loan for Water and Sanitation Project

Parliament has authorised government to borrow Euro 183,309,847.16 from Standard Chartered Bank and an additional UGX120,395,249,259 (approximately Euro 29,572,296) from the domestic market through a six-month Treasury bill.

The approval was granted during Wednesday’s plenary sitting, 17th September, shortly before Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa adjourned the House sine die.

According to Parliament, the borrowed funds will finance the Strategic Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project – Phase II, which is expected to expand access to clean water and improve sanitation infrastructure in towns across the country.

The project, once implemented, will support government’s broader agenda of increasing safe water coverage and addressing gaps in urban sanitation services.
