Nyeko Rejoins Makindye East Parliamentary Race After Surprise Withdrawal
Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko has made a U-turn on his earlier decision to step away from elective politics, confirming on Tuesday that he will once again vie for the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket in 2026.
The legislator stunned both party officials and fellow aspirants when he appeared before the NUP vetting committee for nomination, weeks after declaring on his official X account that he was bowing out of the race.
“I have decided to come back and continue serving my constituents. I will follow the party’s nomination process and respect the outcome,” Hon. Nyeko told journalists shortly after completing vetting.
Party insiders say his return was largely influenced by calls from NUP supporters in Makindye East, who insisted he contest again to safeguard the party’s hold on the constituency.
The constituency flag-bearer slot is already tightly contested, with Nyeko now facing competition from Makindye Division Mayor Ali Kasirye Mulyanyama and popular media personality Robert Ssekidde, widely known as Tuff B.
Just two weeks earlier, Nyeko had announced he was stepping aside, thanking voters for entrusting him with the mandate to serve.
“It is with a heart full of joy that I have served you with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of your vote,” Nyeko wrote in his statement then.
He admitted the decision could have disappointed his base but explained that it came after long personal reflection.
“This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved. It is my hope that the spirit of unity, resilience, and service to our people will remain stronger than ever,” he added.
Nyeko’s comeback has shifted the political landscape in Makindye East, setting up a fierce battle for the NUP flag ahead of the 2026 general elections.
