Nepal Youth Protests Turn Violent Over Social Media Ban

KATHMANDU, Youth-led demonstrations in Nepal escalated into violence after protesters stormed parliament in response to a government decision to ban several social media platforms.

Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds after hundreds forced their way past security barriers on Thursday. At least 40 people were injured, according to hospital officials.

The government defended the ban as a move to “protect national security,” citing online misinformation. But critics argue it is an attempt to stifle dissent.

“This is about freedom of expression,” said protest organizer Arjun Thapa, 22. “The government cannot silence an entire generation.”

International human rights groups have called for restraint and dialogue.
