NDA Nets UGX 100M Worth of Medicines in Eastern Uganda Sweep

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has confiscated medicines valued at over UGX 100 million in a major crackdown on unlicensed pharmacies in eastern Uganda.

The enforcement drive, which stretched across Soroti, Ngora, Bukedea, Kaberamaido, and Moroto districts, lasted a week and resulted in the closure of five pharmacies. At least five suspects were arrested for operating without pharmacist licenses.

According to NDA officials, the seized medicines—over 200 boxes—were being stocked and sold in violation of drug safety regulations.

“This operation has taken five illegal pharmacies off the market, impounded medicines worth more than UGX 100 million, and ensured that those running them without licenses are brought to book,” the Authority said in a statement.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to face charges for breaching the country’s drug laws.

NDA has called on Ugandans to buy medicines strictly from licensed outlets, warning that unregulated operators expose communities to serious health risks.

The operation is part of the regulator’s wider effort to clamp down on counterfeit and unsafe medicines across the country.
