Nabbanja shocked by Pathetic State of Mukono General Hospital
Mukono-Uganda
Uganda’s Prime Minister Rt Hon Robinah Nabbanja expressed outrage over the appalling conditions at Mukono General Hospital, where women are give birth on floors and patients sleep outdoor due to overcrowding.
Her visit came days after President Museveni received reports highlighting the hospital’s deteriorating state.
What Nabbanja found was a facility overwhelmed by patients far beyond its capacity.
Patients were crammed into narrow wards, while others lay on verandas and under trees, clutching newborns.
Inside the maternity ward, mothers recounted to the prime minister harrowing stories of delivering on the floor due to shortage of delivery beds.
Hospital administrator, Geoffrey Kasirye initially attempted to downplay the concerns, but Nabbanja’s observations confirmed the severity of the crisis.
She pledged immediate government action, like provision of a temporary big tent and respective mattress, increased funding, deployment of more medical staff, and infrastructure upgrades to ease congestion.
Later, Nabbanja proceeded to Kayunga Referral Hospital, where she found significantly better conditions, including functioning oxygen systems and improved critical infrastructure and later toured Seeta Namuganga Health Center III on a similar mission.
