Museveni Promises Shs1.2 Billion Reward for Each Uganda Cranes Win at CHAN
In a remarkable gesture of support for Uganda’s national football team, the Uganda Cranes, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged a reward of Shs1.2 billion for every match victory during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament.
The announcement was delivered by the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, during a press briefing at Parliament. She commended President Museveni and the First Lady, Hon. Janet Kataaha Museveni, for their continuous commitment to developing sports in the country.
Quoting the President’s message to the team, Speaker Among urged the players:
“Play with heart, play for your country, and play to win. The whole nation is behind you.”
State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, further explained that the Shs1.2 billion reward will translate into Shs30 million for each player per match won. This is aimed at motivating the squad ahead of their CHAN campaign.
The private sector has also stepped in to back the team. Prominent businessman Hamis Kiggundu, widely known as Ham, has pledged Shs20 million for every Cranes victory.
In addition, Speaker Among personally donated $20,000 (approximately Shs74 million) to the team and committed to matching that amount for each win.
The Uganda Cranes are set to face Algeria in their opening fixture at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole. The atmosphere in camp is charged with optimism as players prepare to deliver both pride and victory for the nation.
With such overwhelming moral and financial support, the mission is clear — win for Uganda, and the rewards will follow.
