Bugembe/Jinja, Uganda

On Friday, November 21, 2025, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially broke ground for the construction of a new Busoga Kingdom headquarters in Bugembe, Jinja City. The ceremony brought together traditional leaders, government officials, and thousands of Basoga, marking a historic step toward strengthening the cultural and administrative capacity of Obwa Kyabazinga bwa Busoga.

This project is both symbolic and practical: it reinforces Busoga’s cultural heritage, promotes regional development, and enhances the Kingdom’s ability to serve its people.

Historical Context: The Kyabazinga and Busoga Kingdom

The Kyabazinga, currently William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV, is the cultural leader of the Basoga people. Traditional kingdoms in Uganda have a long history of shaping local identity, preserving customs, and contributing to governance at the community level. The Kingdom of Busoga, with its administrative and ceremonial center at Igenge Palace, has been central to cultural cohesion in the region.

The new headquarters in Bugembe is intended to modernize the Kingdom’s operations and provide a hub for cultural, economic, and administrative activities.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony

President Museveni arrived in Bugembe as part of his campaign trail but prioritized attending the foundation-laying event. The ceremony was attended by the Kyabazinga, William Gabula Nadiope IV, royal officials including Katuukiro Joseph Muvawala, and the Deputy Katuukiro/Prime Minister Osman Ahmed Noor.

In his remarks, Museveni highlighted the importance of traditional institutions as instruments of unity and development, emphasizing that the new headquarters would improve governance, mobilize communities, and preserve Busoga’s rich cultural heritage.

The Kyabazinga expressed gratitude for the government’s support, noting that the new headquarters would allow the Kingdom to better serve its people and foster economic growth.
