Museveni Injects Shs 2 Billion to Fast-Track Kasubi Tombs Restoration
The restoration of the Kasubi Royal Tombs has received a significant boost after President Yoweri Museveni committed an additional Shs 2 billion to speed up the reconstruction of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
The funds, delivered on the President’s behalf by Senior Presidential Advisor Lt. Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso, were received by Buganda Kingdom officials led by Prince David Kintu Wasajja, Princess Victoria Nkinzi, Princess Namikka, Minister of Culture Choltilda Nakate, and Kingdom Protocol Chief Owek. Kaddu Kiberu.
Before the handover, guests received cultural blessings and toured the site where artisans are painstakingly rebuilding the fire-gutted structure using traditional Ganda techniques.
Lt. Gen. Nalweyiso said the President views the Kasubi Tombs as a national treasure.
“The President recognizes the importance of the Kasubi Tombs not only to Buganda but to Uganda as a whole. He is committed to their full restoration and long-term preservation,” she said.
Buganda’s Culture Minister Nakate described the funding as both timely and symbolic.
“This support is not just about construction—it affirms the role of culture in national development. We will ensure these sites are preserved with dignity and pride,” she noted.
The Kasubi Tombs, the burial grounds of four former Kabakas of Buganda, were destroyed by fire in March 2010. Since then, the kingdom, the Ugandan government, UNESCO, and international partners have been working to restore the site using authentic materials and craftsmanship to safeguard its heritage value.
