Event backed by the European Union, Belgium, Enabel, and Uganda’s Ministry of Education aims to spotlight vocational excellence and expand youth access to hands-on skills training.

Kampala,Uganda

Lugogo Vocational Training Institute, in partnership with the European Union, the Government of Belgium, Enabel, and Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports, is set to host the Intra-Vocational Skills Fair and Competition for the Kampala Metropolitan Region on December 6, 2025.

The one-day regional event, themed “Choose Vocational Education; Get Skilled and Be Unstoppable,” will bring together trainees, instructors, industry partners, and the public to showcase the growing importance of technical and vocational education in Uganda’s fast-changing labor market.

Organizers say the fair will highlight practical skills, celebrate youth innovation, and create pathways for young people seeking employable, hands-on competencies.

Skills Competitions to Highlight Technical Excellence

The centerpiece of the fair will be three intra-regional skills competitions, featuring students from leading vocational institutions in:

Electrical Installation

Woodwork & Carpentry

Building Construction

Participants will tackle real-world technical challenges designed to test precision, creativity, safety, and problem-solving. Judging panels will include industry experts and certified instructors from across the region.

“We want young people to see that skills pay,” Wilson Tumuhamye,The Chief Head Trainer as the Institute’s Principal noted. “Competitions like these not only ignite passion but show employers the caliber of talent emerging from our vocational institutions.”

Departmental Exhibitions to Showcase Innovation

Visitors will also experience departmental exhibitions, where instructors and trainees will display prototypes, tools, finished products, and learning innovations from different training units. Exhibits will range from electrical wiring systems to furniture pieces, construction models, and digital learning tools.

These showcases aim to demonstrate the tangible output of vocational education—allowing parents, students, and potential employers to see first-hand the value of practical, hands-on learning.

Career Guidance, Counseling & Motivational Sessions

To support learners exploring training options, the fair will feature career guidance booths, counseling sessions, and interactive talks led by sector professionals.

Inspirational and motivational speakers from industry, entrepreneurship, and vocational training advocacy groups will share experiences on:

The long-term benefits of technical careers

How skills training leads to job creation

Opportunities for youth empowerment through trades

The messaging aligns with Uganda’s ongoing push to reduce youth unemployment by expanding vocational pathways.

On-Spot Enrollment for Holiday Makers

Recognizing the high demand for short-term training, Lugogo Vocational Training Institute will run on-spot enrollment for holiday makers and youth seeking immediate entry into skills programs.

Holiday skills packages typically include introductory courses in electrical installation, carpentry, welding, plumbing, tailoring, ICT, and other trades that equip learners with practical competencies within a short period.

“Parents and youth can register instantly and begin training during the holiday break—this is a great chance to start building skills early,” organizers emphasized.

Why It Matters

Uganda continues to experience rapid urban growth paired with a rising need for technical professionals in construction, energy, carpentry, manufacturing, and related sectors.

However, vocational education still struggles with outdated perceptions that favor university-based learning over skills-based training.

Events like this fair are essential because they:

Shift public attitudes toward valuing vocational careers

Elevate skills training as a strong alternative to academic routes

Connect youth with real employment pathways

Encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance

Strengthen partnerships between training institutions, development agencies, and industry

By showcasing talent and expanding access, the fair contributes to national goals of improving workforce readiness and reducing youth unemployment.

What to Watch

As the event unfolds, observers will be looking for:

  1. Outstanding talent in competitive skills areas

Particularly in the fast-growing fields of electrical engineering and building construction.

  1. New innovations from youth exhibitors

Including furniture designs, electrical prototypes, and construction models.

  1. Enrollment numbers for holiday maker programs

A spike would signal increasing confidence in vocational pathways.

  1. Commitments from partners and sponsors

Any new pledges could further strengthen vocational education across the Kampala Metropolitan Region.

  1. How vocational skills competitions influence school-to-work transitions

A key indicator of the program’s long-term impact.
