The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Most Rev. Paul Ssemogerere, has urged the faithful to take full ownership of the fundraising campaign “Lamaga Yooyoota Lubaga @ 100 Years,” which is aimed at renovating St. Mary’s Cathedral, Rubaga.
Speaking at a fundraising function held at Rubaga Cathedral on Wednesday, Archbishop Ssemogerere commended the Entebbe Vicariate for contributing UGX 91,520,000, placing it second after the Kampala Vicariate, which raised UGX 230 million.
“At this 100-year anniversary, we want to see a transformed house of God, a renewed environment around it, and spiritual maturity among the faithful,” the Archbishop said.
According to available information, the renovation fundraising drive was organized by vicariates within the archdiocese. On August 20, 2025, Entebbe Vicariate made its contribution, mobilized parish by parish.
Parishes that represented Entebbe Vicariate included Kisubi, Kabulamuliro, Mpala, Entebbe-Bugonga, Buyege, Nabbingo, Bunnamwaya, Kyengera, Buloba, Kasenge, among others. Kabulamuliro Parish emerged as the highest contributor with UGX 7 million.
The Kampala Archdiocese comprises three vicariates: Kampala, Wakiso, and Mitalamaria. So far, Kampala, Wakiso, and Entebbe vicariates have delivered their contributions, with Mitalamaria expected to submit theirs next Wednesday.
Mr. Kiyimba Freeman, the fundraising team leader, revealed that the campaign targets UGX 2.4 billion, of which at least UGX 1.3 billion has already been collected, excluding Entebbe’s latest contribution.
Lead engineer Eng. Pius Mugerwa, who is overseeing the renovations, confirmed that work has already begun. “Construction of a two-storey parking facility in front of the cathedral is ongoing. The compound will be paved with granite, and all walkways will be covered with cobblestones,” he explained.
He added that while the cathedral will retain its original design, the renovations will give it a more attractive and renewed appearance.
St. Mary’s Cathedral, Rubaga, was consecrated on October 30, 1925, by Bishop Enerico Sitenseera. As it marks 100 years in October 2025, the church is considered worthy of a major facelift.
Various religious congregations, organizations, groups of faithful, and individuals have pledged to support the fundraising drive.
