Kenyan Activists Abducted in Uganda After Rally Participation

KAMPALA, Uganda — Two Kenyan activists, Bob Njagi and Nicholas Oyoo, affiliated with the opposition Free Kenya movement, were reportedly abducted in Uganda after joining a rally supporting Bobi Wine.

Eyewitnesses say armed security personnel intercepted them at a petrol station in Kampala following their participation in the rally. Their current whereabouts remain unknown, sparking outrage among civil society groups and opposition leaders in both Kenya and Uganda.

The incident is being seen as part of a worrying trend of cross‑border repression in East Africa, where governments cooperate informally to stifle dissent. Ugandan lawyer Agather Atuhaire and Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi have both condemned the abductions, asserting that they reflect increased coordination between authoritarian regimes to silence voice across boundaries.

In a statement, Bobi Wine demanded the immediate release of Njagi and Oyoo. The Ugandan government and the Uganda Police Force have so far remained silent on the matter. Meanwhile, this raises pressing questions about the safety of political activists operating transnationally in East Africa.

Implications & Watchpoints:

Diplomatic fallout: Kenya may demand explanations through diplomatic channels.

Domestic pressure: Ugandan civil society and media may intensify calls for accountability.

Regional activism risk: Cross‑border arrests may discourage activism beyond one’s country of origin.
