Kampala Traffic Woes: Government Rolls Out Major Infrastructure Plan

The traffic situation in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, is set to undergo a transformation following the announcement of a new infrastructure plan by the Ministry of Works and Transport. The government has pledged to invest 1 trillion Ugandan shillings ($270 million) to address the city’s congestion problems through new road constructions, flyovers, and the introduction of modern public transport systems.

New Roads and Flyovers: Major projects include the construction of a flyover at the Kireka intersection and the upgrading of the Jinja Road corridor.

Public Transport System: The government is looking to roll out a modern bus rapid transit (BRT) system to ease congestion and promote eco-friendly travel.

Traffic Management: The plan also includes the introduction of smart traffic management systems to streamline movement in high-traffic areas.

The implementation of these projects will begin in the first quarter of 2026, and the government has assured citizens that disruptions will be minimized. However, experts warn that Kampala’s traffic issues may take years to fully resolve.
