Kampala Flood Victims Meet President Museveni

Kampala, Uganda

Traders in Kampala affected by recent floods are presented grievances directly to President Yoweri Museveni . Heavy rains earlier this month caused widespread damage to merchandise, particularly in central markets such as Nakasero and Kisenyi. Local authorities have reported significant disruptions to informal trading and small businesses.

The Ministry of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs confirmed that a delegation of traders, representing the flood-affected communities, will formally meet the President at State House. Officials stressed that this engagement is meant to provide a structured forum for presenting losses and seeking relief measures. Traders plan to request compensation, support for rebuilding, and government-backed insurance schemes to protect against future disasters.

“Many of us lost almost everything, and we hope the government will support us in restarting our businesses,” said Josephine Namutebi, a trader affected in Kisenyi market.

Why It Matters
Informal traders account for a substantial portion of Kampala’s economic activity. Flood damage threatens livelihoods, urban supply chains, and the city’s overall economic stability. Government responsiveness could serve as a model for disaster preparedness and relief mechanisms in urban Uganda.

What To Watch
Reports from today’s meeting will reveal whether compensation or relief packages are offered. Officials’ plans for urban drainage improvements and future flood mitigation measures will also be closely monitored.
