Gov’t Spends UGX 35.2Bn on Brand New Vehicles for District Leaders – Magyezi
The Government of Uganda has spent UGX 35.2 billion to procure brand new vehicles for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors, Minister for Local Government Raphael Magyezi has revealed.
Magyezi made the disclosure while responding to a petition by the Uganda Local Government Associations (ULGA) presented on September 4, 2025, highlighting gaps in service delivery at the local government level.
He said the procurement was approved under a supplementary budget passed in April this year to support the work of local leaders.
“Government has procured brand new vehicles (Toyota Double Cabin pick-ups) for all District Chairpersons, City Mayors and Municipal Mayors. The first batch of 90 vehicles will be in the country by the end of September 2025, while the last batch is expected in November 2025,” Magyezi stated.
The Minister commended the President, Cabinet, and Parliament for prioritizing the allocation.
“We thank H. E. the President, Cabinet and Parliament for appropriating UShs.35.2bn in the supplementary budget in April this year, for this purpose,” he added.
According to Magyezi, the move is aimed at strengthening service delivery by equipping local government leaders with reliable transport to reach communities and monitor government programs effectively.
The vehicles are expected to be distributed in phases, with the first batch arriving in late September and the rest in November.
