Government Warns of Imminent Rains, Advises Farmers to Prepare

Uganda is set to receive widespread rains from mid-September through December, according to a new forecast released by the Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA).

The September–December (SOND) 2025 seasonal outlook, unveiled by State Minister for Environment Beatrice Atim Anywar, projects near-average rainfall for much of the country, with regional variations likely to affect farming and water management.

“This forecast is a planning tool. I urge farmers, local governments and disaster risk managers to use it to protect livelihoods, boost food security and strengthen resilience,” said Minister Anywar while presenting the report.

Regional Projections
Western Uganda: South Western Highlands (Kabale, Kisoro) will receive near to above-average rainfall. The Rwenzori and South Western Lowlands will be near-average.
Central Uganda: Lake Victoria basin will peak in October, but Luwero and Nakasongola may receive below-average rainfall.
Eastern Uganda: Mount Elgon sub-region to see above-average rains, increasing from late September.
Northern Uganda: Both northeast and northwest will see near-average totals, though starting later than other regions.
UNMA also flagged the cattle corridor in southwestern Uganda as a potential risk area due to expected below-average rainfall, which could stress pastoral communities.

Farming Outlook
The Ministry has advised farmers to take advantage of the forecasted rains for timely planting while preparing for localized dry spells. The government says the four-month forecast is critical for guiding agriculture, disaster response, and water resource planning.
