Global Sumud Flotilla Intercepted as One Vessel Reaches Gaza

MEDITERRANEAN / GAZA — On October 2, the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian mission aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and challenge the naval blockade, was largely intercepted by Israeli forces.

Most of the over 40 vessels, carrying approximately 500 activists—including global figures such as Greta Thunberg—were halted before entering Gaza’s territorial waters. Israeli authorities described the flotilla as an attempt to enter a combat zone, promising to deport detained activists.

Despite the interceptions, one ship, Mikeno, appeared to have breached the blockade and made contact with Gaza waters—a symbolic breakthrough. Activists allege that Israeli forces used violence during the interception; Israel denies the claims.

Reactions have poured in from governments and citizens around the world. Nations including Spain, Italy, Brazil, and Turkey condemned the interceptions and called for assurances of safe return for their nationals. Protests erupted globally demanding respect for international humanitarian law.
