Four Mourners Killed, 20 Injured in Mubende Highway Crash
Police in Mubende are investigating a fatal accident that claimed four lives and left at least 20 others injured on the Kyegegwa–Mubende highway.
The crash occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Nabutiti–Kisujja, when a vehicle carrying mourners to a burial in Kassanda overturned. The vehicle, an Isuzu Elf registration number UBF 636F, was reportedly transporting about 35 passengers at the time.
Wamala Region Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala confirmed the incident, saying initial findings show that the driver lost control, veered off the road and overturned.
“The accident claimed four lives on the spot and left twenty others nursing serious injuries. The deceased have been identified as Anold Maniriho, 43; Sekubulye Richard, 36; Tumuranze Enid, 40; and Kobusingye Edvina, 23, all residents of Kangoma ‘A’, Rushango Town Council, Ibanda District,” said SP Kawala.
The injured, mostly from Ibanda and Kamwenge districts, include Karuhanga James (34), Mukamohere Kellen (45), Karire Jackline (34), Mufuruko Edison, Twiine Innocent (21), Kwendera John (58), Tumwikirize Scovia (56), Tugume Medard, and Busingye Medius (53). Other victims are yet to be identified.
Emergency responders rushed the injured to Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. Police traffic officers also documented the accident scene, and the wreckage has been towed for mechanical inspection.
According to police, careless driving is the suspected cause of the crash.
“We are making every effort to trace and arrest the driver, who is currently on the run, so that he is held accountable,” SP Kawala added.
Police have cautioned motorists to adhere to traffic rules and drive responsibly, stressing that most fatal crashes are avoidable.
