Entebbe Police Under Fire After American National Dies in Custody
The Entebbe Division Police are facing mounting scrutiny following the sudden death of an American national in their custody under mysterious circumstances, just hours after his arrest.
The deceased, identified as Eric Nkusi, an American citizen of Burundian origin, was arrested on the night of August 1, 2025, for allegedly overstaying in Uganda after his visa expired. He was detained in the station’s holding cells, where he was found dead the following morning.
Sources close to the matter told Urban Gazette that Nkusi, a suspected drug addict, began exhibiting severe symptoms during the night.
He allegedly pleaded with officers on duty to provide him with heroin, warning that without it he could die. The officers reportedly dismissed the request, telling him to wait until he returned to the United States, where the substance is legal in some states.
The incident has reportedly triggered tensions within the police division, with officers trading blame over alleged negligence.
The US Embassy in Kampala has dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nkusi’s death.
His body has since been transferred to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem, as arrangements are made for repatriation to his country.
By press time, police had not issued an official statement on the cause of death or the events leading up to it.
