Electoral Commission Opens 2026 Presidential Nomination Period
The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially opened the nomination period for Uganda’s 2026 general elections, starting with presidential candidates.
EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi announced that from August 11 to August 24, presidential hopefuls can collect nomination paperwork, which includes supporter forms, nomination forms, and detailed guidelines.
To qualify, candidates must secure endorsements from at least 100 registered voters in at least two-thirds of Uganda’s 98 districts. “These supporters must be registered voters in the districts where they endorse a candidate,” Mucunguzi emphasized.
The nomination forms will capture candidates’ personal and political details, while the guidelines outline all necessary legal requirements.
For parliamentary candidates, including those vying for special interest group seats, nomination forms and guidelines are now available for download on the EC’s official website (www.ec.or.ug).
District and city chairperson hopefuls can also access their forms online. Meanwhile, local government councillor candidates must pick up their forms from EC offices at the district level.
Mucunguzi urged all candidates to thoroughly read and understand the nomination rules to avoid disqualification.
In a recent change, parliamentary nominations, initially set for September, have been rescheduled to October 15 and 16. Nomination dates for other positions remain the same.
