The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda has revised the 2026 election roadmap, announcing changes to nomination dates for presidential, parliamentary, Local Government Council, and Special Interest Group (SIG) positions.
In a press briefing on Thursday, August 7, at the Commission’s headquarters in Kampala, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama urged political stakeholders and the public to take note of the new schedule and comply with the updated guidelines.
Revised Local Government and SIG Nominations
The original nomination period for Local Government and SIG positions, set for September 3–12, 2025, has been restructured into three phases:
- District/City Level (Chairpersons, Lord Mayor, Councillors): Wednesday, September 3 to Friday, September 5, 2025, at respective District/City Returning Officers’ offices.
- Municipality/City Division Level (Chairpersons, Councillors): Monday, September 8 to Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at designated district offices.
- Sub-county/Town/Municipal Division Level (Chairpersons, Councillors): Thursday, September 11 to Wednesday, September 24, 2025 (excluding weekends), at county headquarters.
Nomination forms and official guidelines will be available from Monday, August 11, 2025, at district EC offices. District Chairperson forms will also be downloadable from the Commission’s website: www.ec.or.ug.
Parliamentary and SIG Nomination Changes
Parliamentary nominations will now take place on Wednesday, October 15, and Thursday, October 16, 2025, supervised by District/City Returning Officers. Nomination documents will be available from August 11, 2025, both online and at EC offices.
Presidential Aspirants Form Collection
For the presidential race, the EC has set Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, September 24, 2025, for aspirants to collect nomination forms and supporter lists. Aspirants must collect these in person from EC headquarters, Plot 1–3 & 5, 7th Street, Industrial Area, Kampala, during working hours (8:00 am to 5:00 pm, weekdays).
Party candidates must present authorization from their Secretary General or a designated official, while independents must provide proof of voter registration.
Justice Byabakama emphasized the importance of adhering to the revised schedule to ensure a smooth electoral process, calling for coordination and vigilance across the political landscape.
With these adjustments, Uganda’s 2026 elections enter a key preparatory stage, requiring strict observance of the new timelines.
