EC Dismisses Claims That Akena, Amongi Are Missing from Voters Register
The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims that Lira City MP Jimmy Akena and his wife, Lands Minister Betty Amongi, are absent from the national voters register.
The clarification followed Akena’s concerns raised earlier in the week, where he said he was alarmed by the discovery that their names were not appearing in the register.
“We were shocked to discover this morning that our names do not appear in the register for Lira City including the polling station where I have voted for over 20 years,” Akena stated, warning that the matter could jeopardize their participation in the 2026 elections.
Addressing the matter on Wednesday, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi dismissed the reports as misleading, assuring the public that both leaders remain registered voters.
“The Electoral Commission has seen and heard social media reports alleging and claiming that Jimmy Akena and Betty Amongi are missing on the national voters register. To the contrary, both are on the national voters register in the places and locations they elected and chose to vote from,” he said.
Mucunguzi added that the commission had verified their details and shared the evidence with the concerned parties.
“The public should note that both Jimmy Akena and Betty Amongi are indeed on the national voters register. Therefore, social media reports that are claiming the contrary are not correct,” he emphasized.
The development comes as the country edges closer to the 2026 general elections, a period already marked by heightened political activity and scrutiny over the eligibility of prospective candidates.
