Dodo Bird ‘De-Extinction’ Moves Closer as Scientists Achieve Breakthrough
Dallas, USA — Scientists at Colossal Biosciences have achieved a key step toward reviving the extinct dodo bird, with successful culture of pigeon primordial germ cells (PGCs) — the foundation for recreating the dodo genome.
The company, valued at over US$555 million, predicts the bird could be reintroduced within five to seven years. The project is also linked to broader ecosystem restoration efforts.
“The dodo represents both a scientific challenge and a symbol of extinction caused by humans. Restoring it has immense cultural and ecological significance,” said lead scientist Dr. Beth Shapiro.
Controversy:
Conservationists argue resources should go toward protecting endangered species.
Ethical questions arise about creating animals for reintroduction.
Public fascination continues to drive interest and funding.
Mauritius, the dodo’s historic home, has expressed interest in collaborating, though experts say ecological readiness will be critical.
