Denis Onyango Ends Retirement, Set to Guard Cranes’ Goal in World Cup Push

Uganda Cranes will once again look to the safe hands of Denis Onyango after the legendary goalkeeper was recalled to the national team ahead of FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Somalia and Mozambique.

Onyango, who announced his retirement from international duty in April 2021, has agreed to don the national colours again at the age of 39.

His decision marks a dramatic turnaround for a player who had insisted on paving the way for the next generation following Uganda’s failed bid to qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

For many Ugandans, Onyango’s return represents more than just a roster update—it revives memories of his inspirational captaincy when he led the Cranes to the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, their first appearance at the tournament in 39 years.

That same year, he was crowned Africa’s best-based player at the CAF Awards, cementing his status as one of the continent’s greatest keepers.

Still commanding the backline for South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, Onyango remains a figure of authority and consistency.

His leadership is expected to steady a largely youthful squad that faces the daunting task of keeping Uganda’s World Cup dream alive.

To the fans, the return of the “old lion” is more than symbolic—it is a rallying call for belief, resilience, and a reminder that experience still counts on the biggest stage.
