Court Grants Bail to NUP Supporters Amidst Political Tensions
Kampala, Uganda — In a development that has captured national attention, the Kawempe Grade One Magistrate’s Court granted bail this week to ten supporters and leaders of the National Unity Platform (NUP), who were recently detained following politically charged protests. The decision comes despite objections from the state, which argued that the accused posed a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses.
The detained individuals were arrested in connection to demonstrations demanding greater government transparency and democratic reforms. They were initially charged with unlawful assembly, incitement to violence, and disturbing public order.

During the bail hearing, the prosecution cautioned the court, emphasizing the seriousness of the charges and expressing concern that the accused might obstruct the judicial process if released. Conversely, the defense highlighted that all accused persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty and argued that prolonged detention without trial could infringe on their fundamental rights.
The court’s decision to grant bail was hailed by NUP officials as a positive step toward safeguarding democratic freedoms. NUP spokesperson, [Name], said, “This ruling reaffirms the right to fair legal process and ensures that political dissent remains protected in our country.”
Government representatives urged all parties to respect the judicial process and maintain peace amid growing political tensions as Uganda approaches its next elections. Analysts suggest that this bail ruling could set a precedent for how politically sensitive cases are handled in the future.
The case continues as the accused await trial dates, while community leaders are advocating for peaceful dialogue to address the root causes of political unrest.
