CHAN 2024 Boosts Entebbe Airport to Record Passenger Traffic

Entebbe International Airport achieved a historic milestone in July 2025, handling 230,577 passengers, the highest monthly traffic in its history, according to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA).

Spokesperson Vianney Luggya attributed the surge in passenger numbers to several factors, with the CHAN 2024 tournament playing a central role.

“This is the highest monthly traffic in the airport’s history,” Luggya said.

Data from the airport shows that arrivals (119,127 passengers) slightly outpaced departures (111,450 passengers), with an average of 7,437 travellers passing through daily. The figure surpasses the previous record of 222,301 passengers, set in December 2024.

The influx of official delegations and teams for CHAN 2024 was a major contributor to the record traffic, demonstrating the tournament’s impact on Uganda’s aviation sector.

Luggya also pointed to tourism promotion activities and the hosting of international conferences as additional factors driving passenger growth.

“The improved connectivity offered by airlines operating at the airport also played a crucial role in accommodating the increased flow of passengers,” he added.

Alongside passenger traffic, Entebbe Airport handled 5,863 metric tonnes of cargo in July, with 3,961 tonnes exported and 1,902 tonnes imported, reflecting the airport’s dual role in both travel and trade.

The record-breaking figures highlight the significant economic and logistical impact of hosting CHAN 2024, reinforcing Uganda’s position as a regional hub for both tourism and aviation.
