Bridging the Digital Divide: MTN & KCCA Launch Youth Tech Hub in Kabalagala
New centre to offer free internet, computer access, and digital skills training to Kampala’s young people.
In a city where digital skills increasingly mean opportunity, a new partnership between MTN Uganda and KCCA aims to bring access closer home for Kampala’s youth. At the Youth One-Stop Centre in Kabalagala, young people will now have access to computers, reliable internet, and structured training thanks to a digital literacy initiative launched under MTN’s #21DaysOfYelloCare campaign.
What’s Being Offered

Equipment & infrastructure: 15 new computers installed; digital equipment provided to support learning.
Free Internet Access: MTN pledges to keep internet free at the centre for a full year—removing a big cost barrier.
Training & skills development: Digital literacy including basics of computer use, possibly broader skills relevant to employment, innovation or further education.
Why It Matters

Youth in Kampala often face high barriers to accessing digital resources and training; this can limit opportunities in today’s tech-driven job market.
Reduced cost and proximity make learning digital skills more feasible for lower-income neighborhoods.
A tech-enabled youth population can contribute to entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and local innovation.
Potential Challenges
Ensuring sustainability: maintaining computers, internet, trainers, etc beyond the first year.
Reaching youth who are most marginalised (in informal settlements, with limited schooling).
Ensuring the curriculum is relevant to what future employers, or local problem-solvers, need.
This initiative promises more than free WiFi—it’s about making Kampala’s future inclusive. Empowering young people with tools and skills could reshape their chances, and if this model holds, could be scaled to other divisions. The difference could be significant, not just for individuals but for the city’s trajectory.
