Alarm Over Counterfeit Solar Products in Uganda
Uganda’s renewable energy sector is facing a major credibility crisis as fake solar panels and batteries flood the market. Dealers warn that these counterfeit products—often imported cheaply from Asia—fail within months, discouraging rural communities from adopting solar power.
Energy activists have called on the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) to intensify crackdowns.
“Every fake panel sold is a blow to Uganda’s clean energy transition,” said solar dealer Samuel Mugisha at a Kampala briefing.
