African Export‑Import Bank backs Uganda’s Akii Bua stadium project with US$36.4 million financing
Afreximbank has provided a US$ 36.4 million contract-financing facility to Egypt’s SAMCO for the design and construction of the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Uganda.
The financing is under the bank’s EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) programme, aimed at supporting African EPC companies in large-scale infrastructure projects.
Implications: This investment signals Uganda’s push in major infrastructure (sports & events) and the role of regional financial institutions in boosting African construction capacity. Also raises questions about job creation, local content and long-term maintenance.
