Tragedy at Seeta High School: Student Drowns in School Swimming Pool
Authorities in Mukono District are investigating the drowning of a student at Seeta High School, Mbalala Campus. Kevin Nsamba, a 21-year-old Senior Six student, lost his life on Sunday evening after reportedly jumping into the deep end of the schoolβs swimming pool following a football match with fellow students.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Nsamba entered the pool during a supervised session. βAt the time, there were trainees in the pool under the supervision of a trainer or lifeguard, and Nsamba reportedly jumped into the deep end of the pool,β Owoyesigyire stated.
Nsamba’s absence was not immediately noticed. It was only after a school movie session later in the evening that classmates realized he was missing, prompting an overnight search. His body was discovered the next day.
The lifeguard on duty has since been arrested, and a full police investigation is underway.
This incident mirrors a similar tragedy earlier this year at Seeta Junior School, where a pupil also drowned. These cases have drawn attention to the lack of adequate safety measures in educational institutions across Uganda (UG).
Ugandaβs newly launched National Drowning Prevention Strategy mandates the deployment of trained lifeguards, routine inspection of school swimming facilities, and incorporation of safety education in schools. However, critics point to a lack of funding and enforcement, which continues to leave students vulnerable.
The Uganda Police Annual Crime Report 2024 recorded 1,489 drowning deaths last year, with children and students making up a significant percentage.
As the community mourns the loss of Kevin Nsamba, the incident underscores the urgent need for improved water safety and stricter adherence to protective protocols in learning institutions.
