Uganda Ranked 24th in East African Visa Openness Index Amid Regional Mobility Push

Kampala, Uganda

Uganda has been ranked 24th in the East African visa openness index, a new regional travel and mobility ranking that places Rwanda at the top and highlights ongoing efforts to facilitate cross-border movement. The ranking reflects visa requirements, ease of entry, and policy frameworks across East African Community (EAC) member states. Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and others followed in the index, illustrating both progress and ongoing barriers to regional integration.

This evaluation arrives as the EAC pursues deeper economic and social integration, including harmonised travel protocols, single tourist visas and streamlined border crossing procedures. Advocates say enhanced mobility can boost tourism, trade, employment opportunities, and cross-cultural exchange.

Why It Matters
Visa openness is a key indicator of regional cooperation and economic opportunity. For Uganda, ranking 24th signals progress but also reveals work to be done to enhance intra-regional mobility, attract investment, and strengthen the EAC’s unified market.

What to Watch For
Policy dialogue among EAC member states, implementation of streamlined visa schemes, and potential bilateral agreements that simplify travel will be major developments in the coming months.
