Uganda Coffee Exports Surge With European Market Push
Kampala, Uganda
Uganda’s coffee industry is taking an ambitious step onto the global stage with a targeted push into European markets. Government officials and private exporters are participating in trade fairs in Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom, showcasing Uganda’s premium robusta and arabica beans. The initiative emphasizes quality control, traceability, and value-added processing, designed to position Uganda as a top-choice origin for European roasters and specialty coffee consumers.

Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) officials said that the campaign seeks to deepen market penetration and secure premium prices for local farmers. “Our coffee is known for its consistency and flavor. By engaging directly with European buyers, we hope to reduce intermediaries, increase returns for farmers, and build long-term demand,” said Dr. Richard Kawesa, a UCDA trade officer.
European buyers attending the fairs expressed interest in sourcing Ugandan beans directly from origin, citing traceability, consistent quality, and sustainability certifications as key factors. Exporters reported that initial discussions have led to letters of intent from major roasters in Germany and the UK.
Why It Matters
Coffee is Uganda’s top foreign exchange earner, supporting millions of rural livelihoods. Expanding into premium European markets not only strengthens the sector’s economic footprint but also elevates Uganda’s global reputation as a producer of high-quality coffee. Increased revenues can improve farmer incomes and encourage investment in sustainable farming practices.

What To Watch
Monitor announcements of final purchase agreements with European roasters and follow reports on the volume and pricing of coffee exports. Attention will also focus on whether this push results in direct long-term contracts and how farmer cooperatives benefit from the expansion.
