Security agencies tighten nationwide deployment ahead of Uganda’s election season
Kampala,Uganda
Uganda’s security agencies have intensified nationwide deployments as political activity begins to rise ahead of the general election season, with police and military units increasing patrols in major towns and strategic transport corridors. Security officials said the move is part of routine preparedness to prevent violence, protect public infrastructure and ensure political activities are conducted peacefully.
In Kampala and other urban centres, residents reported a visible increase in joint patrols and checkpoint activity, particularly at night. Authorities said the operations are intelligence-led and designed to detect early signs of coordinated unrest, while maintaining public order during a politically sensitive period.
Opposition politicians and civil society groups have called for professionalism and restraint, warning that excessive force or selective enforcement could deepen political tensions. Security chiefs responded by saying their mandate is to protect lives and property regardless of political affiliation.

Why it matters
Security deployments during election periods directly affect political freedoms, public safety and the overall credibility of the electoral process. The balance between maintaining order and protecting civil liberties is closely watched locally and internationally.
What to watch
Scrutiny is expected over how security forces handle political gatherings, whether arrests of political figures increase, and how the Electoral Commission coordinates with security agencies as the campaign environment begins to take shape.
