Aid Cuts Push Refugee-Hosting Countries, Including Uganda, Toward Tougher Border Policies
Kampala, Uganda
A new warning from the Danish Refugee Council suggests that poorer countries hosting large refugee populations, including Uganda, may begin tightening borders and restricting asylum as donor funding dries up.
Uganda has already taken steps by suspending new refugee recognitions from selected countries. Similar debates are emerging in Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan as humanitarian budgets shrink.

Experts warn that reduced access to safe asylum could force vulnerable people into dangerous migration routes, fuelling human trafficking and regional instability.
Why it Matters:
This trend could reshape global refugee protection and intensify humanitarian crises across Africa and beyond.
What to Watch:
Further policy shifts by host countries
Donor funding decisions
UN and regional organisation responses
