MTN Uganda Posts Strong Growth as Digital Payments and Data Usage Surge
Kampala,Uganda
MTN Uganda has reported 13.6% revenue growth over the first nine months of the year, reflecting accelerated expansion in data and mobile money services across the country. The telecom operator said increased smartphone penetration, mobile app usage, and a shift toward digital payments contributed significantly to the rise.
The company also highlighted that rural and peri-urban markets are driving new customer expansion as mobile broadband coverage improves. MTN continues to invest in strengthening network capacity and expanding 4G and fiber connections.
However, analysts note that this growth comes at a time of rising competition within Uganda’s telecom sector, where digital platforms are increasingly integrated with financial services — blurring the lines between telecom operators and banking institutions.
Why It Matters:

Telecom companies are no longer just voice and data providers — they are core financial and economic infrastructure.
This growth signals:
Increasing trust in mobile money for business transactions
Expanding digital access for low and middle-income households
A steady move toward a cash-lite national economy
What to Watch:
Possible regulatory changes affecting fintech
Competition pressure from Airtel and new digital-only fintech startups
Whether data prices continue to drop as usage increases
