Sudan conflict spiralling — UN warns of mass atrocities after el-Fasher fall
“Spiralling out of control”: UN warns of atrocities and mass displacement as RSF seizes el-Fasher
Darfur, Sudan
The war in Sudan has taken a catastrophic turn after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the city of el-Fasher in North Darfur. U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warned the conflict is “spiralling out of control,” citing reports of mass killings, sexual violence and forced displacement. Humanitarian agencies report tens of thousands fleeing the city, with insufficient aid access and growing famine risks in affected regions. The collapse of security in Darfur has also increased the refugee burden on neighbouring states and raised urgent calls for an international response to protect civilians and restore humanitarian corridors.
Why it matters A worsening Sudan conflict risks a regional humanitarian catastrophe — and could destabilise neighbouring countries through refugees and cross-border insecurity.
