Mauritius and Uganda Join Forces to Woo Upscale Travellers

A new luxury tourism collaboration aims to position Uganda as a top-tier destination in the global travel market.

Uganda and Mauritius are charting a bold new course for East African tourism, unveiling an exclusive partnership that promises dual-destination experiences for high-end travellers. The collaboration was showcased during the Lugano Holiday Expo 2025 in Switzerland, a key event targeting affluent European tourists.

According to Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) officials, the partnership will allow visitors to enjoy the lush natural beauty and wildlife of Uganda alongside Mauritius’ pristine beaches — a strategic move to capture a share of the world’s luxury travel market.

“It’s about combining the best of both worlds — adventure and relaxation,” said Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board. “This partnership brings us into the same conversation as global luxury destinations while promoting Uganda’s cultural and natural assets.”

A New Face for Ugandan Tourism

The initiative aligns with Uganda’s broader tourism diversification strategy, which seeks to position the country not just as a wildlife destination but also a haven for high-value travellers seeking bespoke experiences.

Mauritius’ Tourism Promotion Authority echoed similar enthusiasm, highlighting that collaborative marketing will allow both nations to benefit from shared visibility in Europe and Asia’s upscale markets.

Industry analysts note that such partnerships could significantly raise Uganda’s profile in the luxury segment — an area previously dominated by Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania.

Local Stakeholders Welcome the Move

Tour operators in Kampala have expressed optimism. “Luxury travel has always been underdeveloped here. This partnership shows government seriousness about attracting high-spending tourists,” said Denis Kyambadde, a safari company manager.

He added that infrastructure upgrades — including airport expansion and boutique lodge investment — will be crucial to sustaining the anticipated influx of affluent travellers.

✈ What’s Next

The Mauritius–Uganda collaboration will include co-branded tour packages, integrated flight routes, and joint promotions through international expos. Early pilots will target Swiss, French, and British markets before expanding globally.

As the world redefines travel in the post-pandemic era, Uganda’s strategic shift from volume to value could mark a turning point for its tourism industry — and the country’s image abroad.
